A slip is literally a garment that is easy to slip on. It refers to a lingerie item that is shaped like a dress and is worn under a dress for warmth, to restrict transparency or to improve the way a dress hangs.
A half slip is a slip that hangs down from the waist, like a petticoat.
From about the 1920s until into the 1960s, women in Western cultures were sometimes concerned about whether or not their slip was showing, and men and boys sometimes experienced a mild erotic thrill when part of a woman's slip became exposed to view (since a slip was underwear, and its visibility meant there was some dishevelment in the woman's clothes).
