In the 1960s and early 1970s, the gay male "leathermen" were the only BDSM subculture (as it would now be called) that was at all well-organized in the U.S. People with most other types of BDSM interests had a great deal of difficulty finding similarly-minded people, but if you knew about the leathermen, then you had no difficulty in finding plenty of potential play partners...
