equivocal relationship to modern BDSM
Krafft-Ebing may have been progressive in the context of his time, but I'm not sure that he did anything much for BDSM. As late as the mid-1960s, almost the only non-quasi-pornographic non-fantasy-literature information publicly available in the U.S. about what would now be called BDSM practices was the works of Krafft-Ebing and his successors, but they generally had a rather cold and dismissive approach to what they considered to be pathological dysfunction, and overall probably didn't have too much useful to offer to most people who felt BDSM-type impulses...
