Pain is any intense unpleasant bodily sensation, whether caused by illness, injury, harmful physical contact, etc. It is also possible to have mental or emotional pain. Defining pain, or explaining what it feels like, is inherently difficult (much like defining pleasure) largely because people can experience even very similar sensations differently; what one person considers only a mild irritant might seem excruciating to someone else, and a third person might not consider it painful at all. Nevertheless, a very simple definition would be to say that pain is a fundamentally unwelcome experience most people (other than masochist) try to avoid.
Torture and physical punishment usually involve the infliction of pain.
