Lesbian generations (in the United States)

In the 1950s and early 1960s, lesbian culture tended to be working-class, centered in bars, and based around a "butch"-"femme" distinction. At the end of the 1960s and in the early 1970s, a new type of lesbian culture grew out of the resurgent feminist movement, and tended to be middle-class, centered around universities, and strongly rejecting the conventionalized masculine and feminine stereotypes which appeared to be the basis of the "butch" and "femme" roles.
