The Leatherman's Handbook, written by Larry Townsend is a book first published in 1972 which formalised the Leather scene and even defined "Old Guard leather" for possibly the first time.

The book has been banned in Canada (at least until 1997) and the United Kingdom (unknown de-restriction date).

Describing (sometimes defining) alternate sexual activities among male homosexuals, the book is both evocative and itself erotic for those it applies to. Handling each topic with care, insight and wit, the chapters discuss the safety issues, best practices and showcase themed vignettes of his talent for erotic fiction.

This is a book that many others refer back to, considered by many to be the original SM 'How To' book.
