In the UK, Europe and USA, circumcision normally refers to a surgical process on males. It involves the partial or complete surgical removal of the foreskin (the loose tissue covering the glans) of the penis.

Circumcision may be performed for religious or cultural reasons, or health reasons. Benefits are increasingly denied but with a newborn boy circumcision is said to diminish the risk for cancer of the penis and lowers the risk for cancer of the cervix in sexual partners. It also claimed to decreases the risk of urinary tract infections and lowers the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, including especially HIV although many people claim that other factors are at least as important in the statistics used to 'prove' this.

With females, circumcision is the partial or complete removal of the prepuce (clitoral hood), labia minora or even clitoris.
