===Images===
I have just seen an [http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Image:Armbinder.jpg image] from here on Wikimedia. It has the [[GNU Free Documentation License]] attributed to it (user:Balzac) '''even though the image doesn't say so on this site'''. It IS reasonable to assume that unless an image has anything specific, it falls under the site's overall licence but I am not sure this is so in every case and I feel we really must go through all the images we have on this site putting copyright notices on them ALL. There are [[Help:templates|templates]] to assist. We might otherwise be exposed to quite severe penalties. I can start going through them myself but unless there is some annotation, the best I could do is remove the image (perhaps first putting it in a new category "''about to be deleted''" for a while). --[[User:Interesdom|Interesdom]] 07:30, 6 February 2007 (UTC)
==Non-consensuality vs BDSM==
With all the publicity around about forced-labour and forced prostitution etc. I have little doubt that some people looking for links about nonconsensual slavery will end up on this site. It occurs to me that we should have a page on it, distancing this site and BDSM generally and pointing to other sites such as the BBC (I have the link somewhere) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery etc.

What does anyone else reckon and does anyone want to start it? I'm not sure what title for the topic would be best.

--[[User:Interesdom|Interesdom]] 18:08, 11 May 2005 (BST)

Take a peek at [[slavery]] and see what you think. I don't think the site needs to take such a negative stance with something that is generally accepted (outside of BDSM anyways) to be an illegal activity. It's assumed outside the BDSM lifestyle that slavery is socially unacceptable. --[[User:ViciousLover|Vicious Lover]] 05:47:11, 2005-12-26 (GMT)
==Topic Labels - Singular or plural==

We currently have a mixture. What is the 'correct' ruling for this? [[Cane]], [[Dildo]] and [[Paddle]] but [[Blindfolds]], [[Spreader bars]] and [[Violet wands]]. I can understand some things remaining 'plural' even if we have singular - [[Handcuffs]] for example because we don't use 'handcuff' as a noun. Similarly, if we go plural, some things will make easier reading in the singular, such as [[St Andrews cross]]. Nevertheless, I think it would make easier navigating and linking if we were consistent.

Again, much easier if we sort this out now rather than wait until there's many more links. Any ideas?

I try (most of the time) to use the singular. [[User:Balzac|Balzac]] 17:19, 20 Jun 2005 (BST)

:Someone has already moved all three of your 'plural' pages to the 'singular' form. I've gone to the old redirect pages and redirected the links directly to the singular form of the word. I think that you should be bold and change any plurals that you think should be changed to the singular form. It doesn't take long to move a page from 'Blindfolds' to 'Blindfold' and it doesn't take long to hunt down the small number of pages that link to the old page. : The pretty standard wiki convention is Article use singular when possible, as <nowiki>[[Paddle]]s</nowiki> becomes [[Paddle]]s, where it is much more annoying to go the other way (i.e. <nowiki>[[Spreader bars|Spreader bar]]</nowiki> )
==Technical flaw==
I repeatedly found that the Search/Go functions did NOT contain the clickable link to start creating an article (just some coe, probably with a small but critical error in it), while that is still possible if one first creates a 'red link' in an existing article, so the actual creation routine must still be valid - probably a small task for an expert, but greatly needed! ==Copying from Wikipedia==
Now that this encyclopaedia is established, I really don't think there is benefit in copying vast amounts from Wikipedia, especially without any alterations to change the point-of-view, or to add anything specifically Fetish or BDSM to the content. Wikipedia will always have a greater number of readers and editors than this encyclopaedia and so will always be able to be better and more informative on the 'standard' aspects of things. I think there is far better value in letting Wikipedia handle the main topic (such as [[cat o'nine tails]]) while this encyclopaedia just handles the specific aspects of Fetish/BDSM and puts that perspective and meaning on topics. After all, if I wanted to really know the 'standard' definition and use of some word, I will use Wikipedia. I come here - and edit/contribute here - for the Fetish & BDSM context or information.

As a further note, we must ensure that we credit Wikipedia whenever we use copy from there, in accordance with the terms of its licence. See the template [[Template:Wikipedia|Wikipedia]] and its [[Template_talk:Wikipedia|discussion page]].
We have had a number of posts of pornographic images to the site and I think we need to agree a policy regarding this. I have no problem with porn as such, and this is an adult orientated site but we do not have a splash screen warning users that they may come across pornographic images. It is also a UK hosted site so comes under UK jurisdiction in terms of obscene publication laws. My feeling is we should limit any images to softcore only and there must be a clear statement about the licence of any image uploaded to protect us against any possible claims from the image owner. Why is this word "nothing to do with BDSM" (and therefore deleted)? ==Categories==
I think it is over time that we looked at our category structure. I have no wish to upset anyone with criticisms but I have a number of issues with the structure as it stands:
* Some categories hardly ever stand on their own, always being with another. E.G. where there is [[:Category:Bondage]], there is almost always [[:Category:BDSM]]; this is a wasteful and confusing duplication.
* Some sub-categories don't make much sense. E.G. we have [[:Category:BDSM equipment]] subset to [[:Category:Bondage]] even though not all under BDSM equipment is to do with bondage.
* Far too much is under [[:Category:Other_Topics]]. 12 subcategories and 84 articles is, to me, indicative of an incorrect or incomplete structure.
* When considering ''why'' someone might want to use categories (see below), the current structure often fails.

Points to consider:
* This is an encyclopaedia on BDSM and fetish. We need clear topics explaining what those are (and the relationship between them, which I don't think we have) and should treat those topics as gateways, as they form natural top-level categories (but see below also). Unfortunately, while breaking down BDSM is easy, I personally am unsure how to break down Fetish, and our [[:Category:Fetish|category]] on it doesn't help (Body, Clothing, Objects?).
* We can use categories any way we like and for multiple purposes.
* We can use [[Wikipedia:Wikipedia:Namespace|namespaces]] and although these may seem more limiting, perhaps we should consider having some custom ones. How about one for ''Advice'' pages and another for ''Personal Experience'' pages?

There are a number of ways that categorisation might be useful:
# To break down the components of terminology. This may help people who find they are interested in, for example, S&M, to follow a path on that specific category. (This is the easiest structure to build.)
# To highlight an 'effect' path. Some want to understand about relationships, some want to know about sex, others about erotic fun etc.
# To guide and assist newbies (and academic researchers). This would entail enabling them to approach subjects from common starting points, such as kinky sex, bondage, dressing up, role playing etc.

I'm willing to work up some recommendations for a new category structure '''if''' there is enough interest and a consensus on the ways we want to use categories. --[[User:Interesdom|Interesdom]] 12:47, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

:You are right to suggest that the categories need an overhaul. They were never fully thought through in the first place and as you say are contredictory and confusing in places. If you are up for suggesting a new structure I would be very supportive. I think what we should do is to map out the structure first, get agreement, and only then implement it. This is something that will take quite some time to do and I do feel that we should not rush in to make wholesale changes without having time to first fully consider any consequences of the changes. [[User:Balzac|Balzac]] 00:42, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

:Before mapping out the structure, we must know what the structure is trying to achieve. I mentioned (above) three ways that categorisation might be useful. I think we should try to cope with them all, even though that may mean that most topics will be under at least three categories, if not four or five. The disadvantage to this is that too complex a category structure may put people off from using it at all. --[[User:Interesdom|Interesdom]] 16:40, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

There's no problem with having an article in more than one category. It would be silly to have a dozen categories in an article, but I can't see that happening.--[[User:Taxwoman|Taxwoman]] 19:04, 22 December 2007 (UTC)

:For what purposes do we want to use categories? --[[User:Interesdom|Interesdom]] 11:24, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

To allow people to find articles related to the one that they have just seen. If they have read an article on punishment, theyy may wish to see all such articles.--[[User:Taxwoman|Taxwoman]] 20:41, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

I'd like to take on a re-ordering of categories under BDSM. Initially, I'm thinking of creating/moving categories to suit the entire structure. Moving articles would be the second phase. Until the entire job is completed, the wipipedia categorisation will look a bit jumbled: as case of things getting worse before they can get better.
I think that BDSM should be structured as follows:

Content
:BDSM
::Bondage
::Discipline (rename Punishment to this - or include it under?)
:::Punishment equipment
::Domination and submission (should this remain "D/s"?)
::Sadomasochism
::BDSM equipment
:::Gags
:::Punishment equipment
:::Sex toys
:::Shopping (also under Fetish)
::History (also under Fetish)
also I'd like to bring in two new categories that cut across this hierarchy (do these belong under BDSM?):
:Roleplaying
:Relationships
::: '''Please provide feedback on this proposal.''' --[[User:Interesdom|Interesdom]] 20:16, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Looks good. Rather than BDSM equipment, should we have Bondage equipment (covering gags of course) and SM equipment? I would argue that sex toys should only be on Wipipedia if they are in one of these categories. [[User:Ropeuser|Ropeuser]] 22:02, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
:Equipemnt is a tricky area and I don't have a firm opinion. There is equipement used for bondage, for discipline, for S&M. There is also stuff used primarily to enhance D/s (though when I think about this, it is often clothing, and not necessarily fetish clothing). I wonder how often items would overlap these categories if we broke them down. A [[spanking bench]] for example, is something that can be used for restraint (bondage), used in Discipline and used as an aid in S&M. If many itmes would be in all categories there is no point splitting them that way. How about a split between toys and furniture, though? --[[User:Interesdom|Interesdom]] 14:27, 10 May 2009 (UTC)
(I have not put Milowiki on the [[List of AltSex Wikis]] because they don't have anything extra to offer.) : They are technically compliant with GFDL, which only requires acknowledgement of the contributors, not Wipipedia itself. Since they have reproduced the whole edit history of each page, they have actually done more than if they had done a cut and paste of the text and just given a link back to the article here. However, it would be courteous to make more acknowledgement. Further, they seem not to have edited since February 2007 so in many cases the articles are not the latest versions. == License Change ==

With a new version of [[GFDL]] an one time option of changes it [[CC-BY-SA]] was available. Wikipedia and it's sister projects made the switch. I would recommend that we do the same.

GFDL requires a complete version of the license to be distributed with every copy. (which is ~5 page printout) CC-BY-SA only requires a notice on the license it is under. That later is much more inline with how how this wiki does things. --[[User:Roguebfl|Roguebfl]] ([[User_talk:Roguebfl|talk]]) 21:04, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

: It's a pretty big change and it might have implications for our parent site www.londonfetishscene.com. [[User:Ropeuser|Ropeuser]] 21:21, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

::I'm fairly sure the change has to be ''completed'' by August 1st. I don't like to throw cold water on something which undeniably would have some positive effects, but for a small project like ours, with no staff and no real access to legal advice, unless we have a very enthusiastic volunteer who would be willing to take on quite a bit of work, and has been given access to tinker with the configuration parameters of the Wikimedia software (to change the messages that appear beneath edit forms, etc.), then by far the safest alternative would be simply to do nothing... [[User:AnonMoos|AnonMoos]] 23:01, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
::: Actually nothing need to be changed software wise. Those pages you pointed out all wiki pages, not software pages. --[[User:Roguebfl|Roguebfl]] ([[User_talk:Roguebfl|talk]]) 23:39, 23 June 2009 (UTC)
::::We're currently stretching things by not including a sentence such as "By clicking the submit button, you agree to license your contributions under the GFDL" -- and if we were to do something complex like change to dual licensing without indicating the licensing terms in the edit forms, then we would be stretching even further what is already probably stretched a little bit too far. The change could backfire if it's not done well, and what is really needed is someone willing to work on all the details necessary to make sure it goes well, and for that person to be fairly quickly be given access to change the software configuration parameters (reasonably in advance of the impending deadline). [[User:AnonMoos|AnonMoos]] 02:05, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

----
Is this change retrospective? If not, it will be very confusing knowing what's GFDL and what's CC. If it is retrospective, could someone ever complain that they had granted GFDL but were not happy about CC? (Some people are perverse.)--[[User:Speedoslover|Speedoslover]] 19:39, 24 June 2009 (UTC)
: It is retrospective, but Images are given a separate license to the main text (i.e. images are licensed individually where as the text of the wiki is licensed collectively) So the main things is to only move the wiki's license and leave the individual changes to images up to the owners. --[[User:Roguebfl|Roguebfl]] ([[User_talk:Roguebfl|talk]]) 16:27, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
At a glance, the effects of the GFDL and the [[wikipedia:Wikipedia:Text of Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License CC-BY-SA]] are similar. Has anyone looked through them to compare and summarise the differences? --[[User:Interesdom|Interesdom]] 11:22, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
: {{Wikipedia-ref|Wikipedia:Comparison_of_GFDL_and_CC-BY-SA}}
: But the main reason I'm recommended the change is:
:# The GFDL can require front or back cover texts, and force people to preserve invariant sections. The GFDL also requires users to "Preserve any Warranty Disclaimers" such as Wikipedia's General disclaimer for example.
:# The GFDL absolutely requires that distribution be accompanied by the full text of the license (much like its sister for software, the GPL)
: Both of which we are lax on complying with. But CC-BY-SA requirements matches our current practices --[[User:Roguebfl|Roguebfl]] ([[User_talk:Roguebfl|talk]]) 16:27, 25 June 2009 (UTC)

A lot of our photos were copied from [[Wikimedia Commons]], [[SMiki]] Commons and [[Latexwiki]] under GFDL so we'd have to change our licensing if they do. I fear though that SMiki Commons is dead. [[User:Ropeuser|Ropeuser]] 22:20, 25 June 2009 (UTC)
: Well just rembed Photo will be case by case changes --[[User:Roguebfl|Roguebfl]] ([[User_talk:Roguebfl|talk]]) 01:23, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

----
There appear to be several misconceptions here. First, the change is from GFDL to '''dual licensing''', so that an end-user will be able to choose either GFDL or CC-SA (whichever is most convenient or preferred). The GFDL is not going away. So this means that photos at Wikimedia Commons will never have fewer licensing options than they had before. They may have additional licensing options, but the ones that existed previously will still be there.

Second, all that about GFDL "invariant sections" and "cover texts" is really irrelevant for us here. We can choose to reject contributions whose uploaders insist on "invariant sections" and/or "cover texts", and that's the end of it. No contributor can force "invariant section" or "cover text" provisos onto content generated by any other contributor.

Third, text contributions are in fact licensed by the individual editors (that's the point of including the license terms in the edit forms).

Fourth, on Wikimedia Foundation wikis (Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons), traditionally every page has linked to [[GFDL]], and there also have been links to image description pages and article edit history pages -- and for a number of years, this was considered "good enough" in sastifying the GFDL requirements, as long as the GFDL-licensed information stayed on the Wiki (if the content were to be copied to another publicly-accessible website, that might be another matter).

Fifth, Smiki Commons kind of lost most of its point when the English Smiki site never gained momentum, but if you have a serious concern about Smiki Commons, then you can leave a message on the talk page of the main page of Smiki.de (i.e. http://www.smiki.de/Diskussion:Hauptseite ) and there's good chance of receiving a reply. [[User:AnonMoos|AnonMoos]] 02:33, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

: It this forth point that key. Because LOOK at our pages... WE don't do this. --[[User:Roguebfl|Roguebfl]] ([[User_talk:Roguebfl|talk]]) 02:57, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

::If this site is not in full technical compliance with GFDL licensing terms, then switching to dual-licensing will not by itself fix such problems (and the change to dual licensing may involve many additional issues which we are not well-equipped to handle). I recommend that Balzac add the following text to edit forms: ''"By submitting an edit, you irrevocably agree to release your contribution under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2, 1.3, or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, with no Front-Cover Texts, and with no Back-Cover Texts. Re-users will be required to credit you, at minimum, through a hyperlink or URL to the article you are contributing to, and you hereby agree that such credit is sufficient in any medium."'' This will be a significant good-faith gesture towards GFDL compliance... [[User:AnonMoos|AnonMoos]] 16:23, 27 June 2009 (UTC)

Actually on [http://www.wikia.com/wiki/Forum:Licensing_update_June_19,_2009 further reading] dual licensing is an option, NOT a requirement. You can switch ''fully'' over CC-BY-SA. and the long and the short of is CC-BY-SA IS better for reference material, easier to understand, available in multiple languages (GFDL is only available in American (legal) English), and most important complaince is exactly in line with how we do things. --[[User:Roguebfl|Roguebfl]] ([[User_talk:Roguebfl|talk]]) 06:47, 28 June 2009 (UTC)
One thing I've learned about this website is that I would not really call it a BDSM website. I would call it a sexual education website whose BDSM references are plentiful. I've heard that word mentioned in many sexual contexts, and I think articles about that would complete it. '''TENS''' ('''Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator''') is considered a method of pain relief, and has a wide following for use in obstetric care particularly labour. There is a secondary market for [[TENS unit]]s in the [[BDSM]] community, where the units are used for erotic play involving electrical stimulation.

Care should be taken not to allow the current to cross the chest as it may interfewre with the heart; people with heart problems or pacemakers and pregnant women should avoid using them altogether.

In the traditional terminology of morality/religion, '''chastity''' meant limiting all sexual acts exclusively within marriage (i.e. with one's spouse only), and keeping one's sexual thoughts and feelings under control and in what was considered to be their proper place (i.e. not letting them dominate one's life). Some religions encourage total abstention from sexual acts for those capable of it; for example, Roman Catholic priests and [[nun]]s are obliged to be completely chaste.

In BDSM usage, enforced chastity (in the sense of externally-imposed denial of the free use of one's genitals) is a common fantasy, often implemented by [[chastity belt]]s (or other chastity devices), [[chastity piercing]]s, or [[orgasm denial]].

The word "chastity" is derived from the Latin ''castus'', "pure, unsullied". A similar concept is "celibacy", abstaining from marriage or sex, usually for religious reasons; this comes from the Latin ''caelibatus'', "state of not being married".

'''Anal chastity''' is abstention from [[anal sex]]. It is enforced by chastity devices that incorporate a [[butt plug]].

[[Image:Chastity shorts detail v1.JPG|thumb|right|Rubber chastity shorts]]
'''Chastity shorts''' are [[shorts]] that cannot be removed by the wearer, hence force him or her to be [[chastity|chaste]]. They are generally made of [[leather (material)|leather]] or [[rubber]]. Usually, they are kept on by a lockable [[belt]] and also have lockable straps around the ends of the legs.

While they would also work for females, they are normally worn only by males.

Such shorts sometimes have a metal or stiff leather plate covering the [[genitals]] to make it harder to fondle them through the shorts.
=== Adding new stories ===
If you want to add a new story please carry out the following steps

# Edit this page and insert the title of your work. Stories and poems are listed in the order they were added, newest at the top of the list. The work should be listed using the following syntax:
#:'''<nowiki>*[[The title of your story]]</nowiki>'''.
# If the story or poem uses a common word such as bondage, there might already be an article of that name on the system. In that case, prefix the title with '''story:''' and use the following syntax '''<nowiki>*[[Story: Bondage|Bondage]]</nowiki>''' This will enable you to link to an article called 'Story: Bondage' but display only 'Bondage' on the screen.
# Preview this article and check that the link for your work apppears in red; if it appears in blue then an article of that name already exists and you must choose a new name for your story. Save the changes when you have finished.
# Go back to the story page and click on the link for the piece you have just inserted.
# You will now be in an editing screen. Paste your poem into the input screen. Paragraphs and verses need to have blank lines separating them; to force line feeds without leaving a blank line put a '''<nowiki>
</nowiki>''' at the end of each line.
# Preview, and when correct click on save. Done!

A '''pain slut''' is someone, male or female, who has a high sexual attachment to severe [[pain]]. The term is largely interchangable with the term [[Masochist]], but it is often used to describe someone whose primary sexual drive is the receiving of pain and is vocal about his/her needs in this regard, especially when, as with a sexual [[slut]], they are not very discriminating in their choice of partner.

'''Underdressing''' is a term used by male [[cross-dresser]]s to describe wearing female undergarments such as [[lingerie]] or [[stockings]] under their male clothes, especially when out in public.

For example, the famous low-budget film-maker [http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000248/?ref_=tt_ov_dr Edward D. Wood, Jr.] said that he often wore women's underwear under his military [[uniform fetish|uniform]] during World War II.

'''Jon Jacobs''' (1945-2004) was an influential freelance writer who helped develop and define the various threads of behaviour that are today collectively known as [[BDSM]].

He co-authored (with [[Gloria G. Brame]] and William D. Brame) the book ''Different Loving: An Exploration of the World of Sexual Dominance and Submission'' (published by Villard Books, New York, 1993. ISBN 0-679-40873-8). The book is self-described as a "breakthrough in sexual literature" and is one of the few books written by a BDSM "practitioner" that is commonly quoted by professionals and others outside the [[lifestyle]].

Jacobs was often derisive of the softer side of BDSM and was much more interested in the relationship dynamics of [[Total Power Exchange]]. In a speech in 1996 he said:
:When you "submit" to or "dominate" someone in a situation where [[safe word]]s are used and when limitations are negotiated, you are not actually submitting or dominating at all - you are playing at it.

The '''spoons''' position (also '''spoon position''', '''spooning''') is a popular [[List of sex positions|sexual position]]. The name derives from the similarity to the way that two spoons may be positioned side by side, with their bowls nested.

[[Image:571px-Spoon-sex-position.jpg|right|thumbnail|The Spoons sex position]]

In the spoons position, the man lies on his side, with his knees bent while the woman lies on her side, with her back pressed against his front, her legs slightly parted, her hips tilted to one side, and her knees bent. They line up to align his [[penis]] with her [[vagina]], and his penis is then guided into her vagina from the rear. It is also possible to use this position for [[anal sex]] rather than [[vaginal sex]].

This position allows for a great deal of physical intimacy, as the full-body contact allows both partners to cuddle and caress one another. The man can provide the woman with [[clitoris|clitoral]] stimulation by hand while engaging in vaginal penetration in this position (or, in the case of anal penetration in this position, the penetrating partner can [[masturbation|masturbate]] the penetrated partner). Low-intensity sex can go on for a long time in this position. However, the lower intensity from this position may not be desired by both parties; furthermore, penetration is quite shallow, and clitoral pressure is not very intense without manual manipulation. In addition, there is little visual stimulation for either party, as they are not facing one another and cannot see each other's bodies clearly.

It is also possible, and popular, to use this position (without penetration) simply for cuddling, as it provides a lot of close contact and shared body heat. The term '''spooning''' usually refers to this activity.

A modification of this is for the man to place his uppermost leg over the belly of the woman, who may then lie somewhat more on her back, with the knees of both legs drawn up. The man's lower leg is extended under the inverted "'''V'''" of those legs, with penetration from beneath those legs. This can be a very comfortable position for both partners and is useful as a resting position between more energetic episodes.

[[Play]] is used to describe [[BDSM]] activitities that are not necessarily sexual or sexually-motivated. It is normally used to indicate [[SM]] activities but might refer to aspects of [[Human sexual behaviour|sexual]] or [[Domination and submission|dominance & submission]] [[roleplay]].

Play can be compared to [[music]], with each sensation like a note. Different sensations are combined in different ways to produce the total experience. Creating a pleasurable [[Sadomasochism|sensation]] experience has a lot to do with a competent [[Top (BDSM)|top]] and the [[Bottom (BDSM)|bottom]] being in the right state of mind. Trust and sexual arousal help a person prepare for the intense sensation.

How dominant or submissive a person may be in their regular life does not determine their preferred role in BDSM play.

BDSM play often includes the psychological pleasure of [[Fetish|fetishes]].

'''Micro-management''' is a form of [[BDSM]] play in which a [[Dominant]] directs a [[submissive]]'s every action and behaviour. It is rare for this play to last for more than a few hours at a time because of the time commitment required of the Dominant, who will necessarily be involved continually unless he has simply [[Restraint|tied]] the submissive to a wall.

A '''cow whip''' (sometimes called a Florida Cow Whip) is a type of singletail [[whip]] that was developed for use by cowboys in the state of Florida in the southern United States. It resembles an Australian [[stock whip]].

The most obvious differences between a cow whip and a stock whip are:

* A cow whip is usually braided from nylon cord (often called parachute cord) instead of [[leather]] or kangaroo hide, so that it can better withstand the wet conditions in the swampy areas where it was developed.
* The cow whip does not have the flexible joint that is characteristic of a stock whip.
* The braided body of the cow whip often fits into a recess in one end of the handle and is often secured with a piece of the centre braiding that exits a hole in the side of the handle and is tied around the handle.

'''Sub drop''' is an emotional reaction that can sometimes happen after [[play]]. The feelings are akin to depression.

A whole mix of body chemicals get released during play - endorphines, natural opiates, adrenaline and seratonine. These are very powerful chemicals, some of them akin to some heavy non-prescription drugs.

All these being released in the body has an impact.

After play, sometimes [[sub]]s can feel extremely down. This is something that both the sub and the [[Dom]] should be aware of. It might be a little bit like the "small death" and the "sadness" that all animals are supposed to feel after making love.

Doms need to be aware of Sub drop and also the need for emotional and other care post-[[session]]. Different Subs react to play in different ways; some need hugs and cuddles, some need a period of reflection, some need warmth, e.g. being wrapped in a blanket etc.

'''Aftercare''' refers to the special attention given to a [[Bottom (BDSM)|bottom]] or [[bondage]] [[victim]] after a [[scene]].

The intensity of emotion and the physical demands put upon the [[submissive]] can be extreme (which may be one of the attractions to [[BDSM]] for them) and careful attention is often needed to help them settle back to a more normal state.

If they have been in stringent or prolonged bondage, or have been [[flogging|flogged]], they may have aching muscles or skin marks that require attention. Long periods of [[sensory deprivation]] may lead to disorientation.

Often, the first thing they will need is a drink of water, followed by a trip to the toilet. Lots of tender affection, cuddling and kissing will often comfort the person and improve their mental state.

'''Aftercare'''

There is a lot more to it than sweets, water and cuddles. There is a science to it and it takes being aware of the body and the way it reacts to stimuli and understanding exactly what occurs in the body to begin with.

First off, there are two different things that can and most often do occur in our body during a scene. Our bodies adrenal glands kick in and our body also produces endorphins.

'''What are Endorphins and what do they do to your body?'''

In 1975, Endorphins were discovered by Dr. John Hughes and Dr. Kosterlitz. Endorphins have both neurological and spinal effects. Twenty different types of Endorphins have been discovered in the nervous system. The word Endorphin is abbreviated from 'endogenous morphine' which means a morphine produced naturally in the body. Endorphins are renowned worldwide as anti-stress hormones that relieve pain naturally. They are secreted to remove stress or pain when you have pain or stress. In other words, they block the signal of pain to the nervous system. This being an effect that reduces the pain and causing an euphoric effect to occur. (1). Endorphins enhance our immune system: When endorphins are secreted, they activate natural killer cells (NK cells) and thereby increase our immune system. Under stress, your immunocompetence is reduced remarkably. NK cells are likely to lose their effect under stress. NK cells, which take responsibility for the immune system by killing defective cells, also have the ability to kill cancer cells.

(2). Endorphins block the lesion of blood vessel: As the endorphins are secreted more and more, the shrunken blood vessels return to a normal state allowing blood to flow in a normal manner. Most adult disease start from clogged blood vessels. Endorphins help to improve the circulation of blood.

(3). Endorphins have anti-aging effects by removing Superoxide: The oxygen coming into the body from breathing can change into a Superoxide. This is one of the biggest enemies for humans, causing diseases and aging. Endorphins can remove this harmful Superoxide by facilitating the production of 'SOD' (Superoxide Dismutase). This is possible because the endorphins can keep the brain cells young and healthy. SOD is the enzyme which neutralizes the toxicity of the harmful Superoxide. Therefore endorphins have anti-aging effects.

(4). Endorphins are anti-stress hormones: The ability to cope with the stress is in proportion to the endorphins levels we have in our body. We will encounter great difficulties in removing our stress unless sufficient amounts of endorphins are released.

(5). Endorphins have a pain-relieving effect: Our nervous system secretes neuro-transmitters when it receives the signal of pain. Once the endorphins are released at that moment of pain, endorphins combine with endorphin receptors on the neuron, which hinders the first neuro- transmitters from being secreted.

(6). Endorphins help improve your memory: You can improve your memory by the help of endorphins because they can keep the brain cells young and healthy. They will help you to maintain a harmonious relationship with your colleagues. You will also be able to think creatively and have more endurance.

(7). Endorphins are mood regulators: Amongst the twenty different kinds of endorphins identified several of them have been found to be effective mood regulators.

Endorphins, when they are secreted continuously, spread to the whole body including the brain - hence the feeling of euphoria but also the ability to process pain at a different rate. Unfortunately Endorphins cannot work for a long time because our body also makes enzymes, called endorphinase, which chew up the Endorphins. This is the reason why Endorphins can stop working when a scene ends and pain can then set in. It is not an uncommon thing to take a good deal of pain in scene and then the next day find ourselves saying, "What WAS I thinking?"

'''What are the Adrenal Glands and what do they do to your body?'''

The Adrenal glands, are small, pyramid-shaped organs that secretes many important hormones. The body has two adrenal glands, one on top of each kidney. The adrenals, also called suprarenals, measure about 2 inches (5 centimeters) each in diameter. Each adrenal gland consists of a medulla (inner core) and a cortex (outer shell).

The adrenal medulla is controlled by the nervous system. Nerve signals stimulate the medulla to secrete epinephrine (also called adrenalin) and norepinephrine (also called noradrenalin) into the blood. These hormones help the body adjust to sudden stress. For example, they increase the rate and strength of the heartbeat, raise the blood pressure, and speed up the body's energy-producing processes.

The adrenal cortex secretes many hormones, some of which are essential to life. These hormones, called corticosteroids, belong to three main groups—(1) glucocorticoids, (2) mineralocorticoids, and (3) sex hormones.

Glucocorticoids regulate the use of digested foods and help the body adapt to stress. The most important glucocorticoid is cortisol, also called hydrocortisone. The secretion of the glucocorticoids is controlled by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). ACTH is produced by the pituitary gland, a small organ near the base of the brain. Physicians use cortisol, and synthetic compounds that resemble it, to control inflammation.

Mineralocorticoids regulate the excretion of sodium and potassium by the kidneys. Aldosterone is the most important mineralocorticoid. Renin, a hormone secreted by the kidneys, controls the production of aldosterone. Overproduction of aldosterone causes high blood pressure in some people.

The adrenal glands produce only small amounts of sex hormones, chiefly the male sex hormones called androgens. The adrenal androgens help regulate the development of pubic hair and other early sexual characteristics in both males and females during the period just prior to puberty. (As this only occurs in this stage, it is really just an addition fact here and has nothing to do with what occurs to an adult body within the confines of a scene)

SO... Now that you know what both our adrenal glands and endorphins are and what they do to your body, it is easier to actually understand what happens during a scene and then also look at how your body (or the body of another) is reacting after a scene and to compensate for some of the negative after effects that can come about.

During a scene, our bodies push both and, in effect, our bodies are thrown out of balance because of the massive chemicals it puts there to compensate. The MOST important reason for aftercare is to assist the body in re-adjusting to its normal state. It is not healthy NOT to do that frankly.

The down sides to Endorphins and what our adrenal glands give us in scene:

The body doesn't normally produce huge amounts of endorphins usually and even when it produces more than usual (such as when you are in scene) the endorphins will also activate opiate receptors, which is the process that allows you to process the pain easier but it can cause some other side effects as well sometimes. Opiate receptors can inhibit other things in the body aside from pain receptors - things such as seratonin.

Seratonin can affect things such as appetite, sleep, memory, learning, temperature regulation, mood, sexual behavior, cardiovascular function, muscle contraction, endocrine regulation, and, of course, depression.

It is theorized that it is the endorphins affects on the seratonin levels during scening that causes many of the after affects that need to be dealt with in aftercare and most especially could be responsible for the severity of the "drop" phenomenon some encounter anywhere from immediately after ending a scene to up to 270 hours after a scene. (Yep that is 11.25 DAYS later folks - although this is extremely rare - it has been known to happen in a few cases).

The down side to what the adrenal glands do is that it virtually STARVES your body of some things such as potassium and sodium. Also the adrenalin rush causes the body to burn fluids at a much higher rate as well so you are rapidly dehydrating yourself at the same time.

Can you see the picture of a drop now?

Reduced or inhibited serotonin levels, lowered blood sugar, potassium and sodium levels, lowered body fluids. This causes (depending on the depletion levels) lethargy, depression, muscle weakness and/or cramps, nausea, headaches, dizziness, irregular body temperature, lack of mental focus, irritability, and can lead to unconsiousness and even more severe problems.

One other thing to note (thank you my friend for pointing this out). The signs mentioned above - they are NOT solely occurring in the bottom/submissive/slave - the top/Dominant/Master expends energy in the form of both mental and physical exercise - this WILL cause much of the same things to occur in their bodies as what occurs in their partners - depending on their physical make up, the strenuousness of the scene, etc. - they may actually drop harder than their partner at times.

It is therefore important to not only be aware of what is occurring with your partner but also with you if you are the top/Dominant/Master. I have known of a few instances where a Dominant pushed themselves past where they should have gone and they collapsed after a scene.

Reading the Signs and What to Do:

The second most necessary thing for the human body is water. The first is air. Water serves a dual purpose in the body. Water in the human body is 70 percent of our muscles and 75 percent of our brains. Therefore, replenishing any reduction of water to our bodies is the first most essential thing to do after (and during) a scene.

The second benefit of water is the bodies ability to flush itself with water. The more water you push through it, the more quickly you will flush the body of those chemicals which are causing the imbalance. It will also push the nutrients you are putting into your body to replenish your losses at a faster rate as well.

So if you take nothing else away from this, take this piece, WATER - drink lots and lots of water. Even if you do nothing else, this one thing alone will reduce several of the after effects and the length of time you experience them.

From there, you need to be reading the signs. Is the person cold? Are the shaking? Are they coherent? Are they rational? What do they MOST desire? All of these questions will help you to determine the symptoms and from that you can basically determine what the body needs.

Signs of Dehydration:

sunken eyes dry or sticky mucous membranes in the mouth the skin may lack its normal elasticity and sag back into position slowly when pinched up into a fold (poor skin turgor) decreased or absent urine output (oliguria or anuria) decreased tears deep and rapid breathing delayed capillary refill with severe dehydration -- lethargic or comatose

Signs of HIGH Blood Sugar:

frequent urination excessive thirst hunger fatigue blurry vision Signs of LOW Blood Sugar:

Fatigue General discomfort, uneasiness, or ill feeling (malaise) Nervousness Irritability, or even aggression Trembling Headache Hunger Cold sweats Rapid heart rate Blurry or double vision Confusion Sleeping difficulty Paleness Muscle pain Memory loss Palpitations, or feeling your heartbeat (heartbeat sensations) Hallucinations Fainting Different size pupils Dizziness The Biggest Nasty of them All

Remember that I mentioned that endorphins can affect other things in the body? There are five main chemicals that govern our brains emotional center. Opiods (endorphins), Dopamine, GABA, Serotonin and norepinephrine. The first and last I mentioned in the first post. But here is the real kicker to all of this.

Opiods start the process - if those levels are off they trigger the others. So high levels of endorphins, lowered levels of the others usually, and when the endorphins are dissipated by enzymes, those lowered levels will cause anxiety, depression, and lots of other icky feelings to remain in place. Thus sometimes causing severe sub and top drop.

The really bad thing is that your body can get caught in a loop almost with this and if it is not corrected, it can go on for days and in very severe cases weeks, months and even years. This means that these signs really need to be watched for carefully. Especially in those that already suffer from bouts of depression and/or anxiety.

So how do you Treat the symptoms?

As stated dehydration is the easiest to treat once it hits but the best way to deal with this is not to let it occur in the first place frankly. Keeping fit, eating right, drinking the proper amounts of fluids each day all lend themselves to have LESS problems after a scene.

Still sometimes we stress our bodies to the max in scenes (that is sort of the point sometimes I think) and then the after effects can be anywhere from minor to very serious when we do that. Therefore knowing how to read the signs and what to do when they come is just as important.

Know the difference between high and low blood sugar - feeding sugar when a person is spiked on sugar can cause them serious harm. Most scenes though will result in lowered blood sugar levels but do not assume that is the case with everyone - diabetics and hypoglycemics can react exactly the opposite sometimes. So know their medicals before playing with them (that goes BOTH ways folks).

Low blood sugar can be easily treated with both natural and raw sugars. The body will normally respond within 20 minutes or so - if it doesn't you are probably suffering from additional problems on top of lowered blood sugars.

Dehydration will often cause the body to be lacking in potassium and calcium so eating things with salt like crackers, salted nuts, preztels help. Bananas and Strawberries are high in potassium so they are excellent fruits to have on hand after scening (or even during). High potassium drinks and smoothies with bananas in them are beneficial.

The body is going to want to balk at eating for the most part normally, but small portions will usually go in and stay in.

Potassium is slow to return to the body so it will normally take 24 to 48 hours for the symptoms - muscle cramps and charlie horses in the extremities (low end), nausea and runny bowel movements (medium end), body cramps, vomiting, diarreaha (sp?) (high end) - to dissipate and your body to return to normal. HINT: Many times cases of food poisoning - are actually severe irregularities with Potassium levels. Course food poisoning can cause depletion of Potassium so it is difficult to tell which is actually occurring while it is occurring.

Sleep helps give the body time to adjust itself but get that water into you first. Even an hour will help usually.

And where do the cuddles and such come into all of this? That is the area that deals with stress. When you scene you put your body into stress (both of you do basically). THAT is where the body reacts and your neurotransmitters go all wonky and that affects all five of the neurotransmitters and so it is necessary to break that cyclical thing your body will do when this occurs.

Hugs, laughter, orgasms (yep they are NOT just enjoyable they are GOOD for you too), human touch, all of those things aid in breaking that cyclical thing that keeps you in a lethargic and/or depressed state. Other things are up to you - what tends to make you happy - or even just calms you when you need to calm down - that is what the key is, what brings you up or balances you when you are down or anxious. Think about those things and plan to access them within the next few days after a scene.

'''Hodophilia''' is defined as [[sexual arousal]] caused by travelling to and/or visiting places one has never previously visited.

It comes from the Greek "Hodos" meaning "Path" and "Philia" meaning "love of". The opposite is '''hodophobia'''.
Clubs that have a strong dance element tend to be places to see and be seen and have a strong [[fetish]] fashion element. They attract people who want to socialise and as the name suggests 'dance'.

Care should be taken when dancing energetically in [[PVC]] or [[latex clothing]]. If the club is hot and crowded, this can easily lead to extreme heat fatigue as you cannot sweat much.

'''Birthday spanking''' is a custom in certain circles that a number of people (e.g., father at home, teammates in a club, classmates in certain training institutions) administer a [[spanking]] to the [[buttocks|bottom]] of the birthday boy or girl, as an annual rite of passage and probably a matter of bonding. Customarily, the person receives a number of spanks equal to their age, plus an extra "one to grow on". So, for example, someone who was turning 12 would get 13 spanks.

It could also be used to mean spanking someone [[naked]], i.e. wearing their [[birthday suit]].

'''Hilberting''' is an [[Internet]] discussion group term referring to the common practice of erecting Straw Man arguments to score points off other members. When hilberting, one specifically misquotes, quotes out of context, or makes a misleading summary of another's position, and then scores popularity points by attacking that manufactured position.

It may even involve attacking someone for an opinion they have condemned (in text which one has not reproduced). For example, the statement "Murder is taken for granted in this country, and I condemn it utterly" might receive the hilberting response "What kind of murderous person are you to say that 'Murder is taken for granted in this country'? On the contrary, I believe murder should be condemned utterly!"

[[Image:Prince_Albert_Piercing.jpg|thumb|180px|left|A Prince Albert 4 ga curved barbell]]

A '''Prince Albert''', also known as '''PA''' or sometimes just '''Albert''', is a metal ring worn through a piercing at the end of the [[penis]]. It is usually made of surgical steel, but can also be in gold. It is most commonly encountered among [[gay]] males, but heterosexual males also use it. The genital hole will usually be formed either on the underside between the urethra and the [[frenum]] or through the urethral opening and emerging from the underside of the glans. The ring may be closed by a steel ball.

A nerve bundle runs along the centre of the frenulum. While some piercers may choose to avoid the bundle, others do not. The piercing may be centred if the bearer is circumcised. Otherwise, the piercing will be done to the side because the skin in the area needs to be able to dynamically reposition itself.

Supposedly, Prince Albert, consort of Queen Victoria, wore one, and popularised it among his set.

[[Image:Prince Albert 2.jpg|thumb|180px|left|PA Ball Closure Ring 3.2 mm]]

==Jewellery==
Prince Alberts are typically pierced at either 10 or 8 GA. In either case, they are often immediately stretched to 8 or 6 GA. The stretching prevents bleeding during the initial healing stages by exerting pressure on the fissure. Outside of this initial stage, they are rarely seen below a 10 gauge (2.6 mm). PAs are sometimes stretched to a 0 or 00 gauge, or about 11/32 inch (8 to 9 mm) diameter. Stretching to sizes of 6 to 2 GA is probably most common.

[[Image:PA and Frenulum.jpg|thumb|180px|right|PA with frenulum piercing]]
Very large gauge or heavy jewelry can cause thinning of the tissue between the urethral opening and the healed fistula creating an accidental meatotomy. Conversely, extremely thin jewellery can cause the same tearing in what is commonly referred to as the "cheese cutter effect", either during sudden torsion or over a long period of wearing, especially if the thin jewellery has anything heavy attached to it (gay males tend to add charms to a PA). In some cases this can be corrected surgically. While most wearers find that PAs are comfortable to wear and rarely remove them, even during sex, some individuals might find that extremely large or heavy jewelry is uncomfortable to wear for long periods or interferes with the sexual functioning of the penis.

Jewellery usually worn in a PA includes the circular barbell, captive bead, and the Prince's Wand. Short curved barbells are usually about 3/8 inch or so length, so one ball sits on the lower side of the penis and the other ball sits at the urethral opening. This type of jewelry prevents discomfort that can come from larger jewelry moving around during daily wear.

[[Image:Frenulum PA.jpg|thumb|180px|left|Frenulum piercing]]
The Prince's Wand is a particularly unusual piece of jewelry. It consists of a hollow tube with a threaded cap at the end. The tube is inserted into the urethra, and a stem is inserted through the PA piercing and into another threaded hole on the side of the tube. The general shape is similar to a policeman's nightstick. The side stem holds the tube in place. The threaded cap, often just a ball, can be removed so the wearer can urinate through the hollow tube without having to remove the jewelry.

==History and culture==
The Prince Albert piercing may have been practised in European culture for some time, and while there are many tentative theories as to its origin, the true origin of this piercing is unknown. Many of the theories regarding this piercing's history suggest that the piercing was used to secure the penis in some manner, rather than having a sexual or cultural purpose.

The Prince Albert piercing is often claimed to be named after Queen Victoria's consort, Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. It is alleged that he wore a ring attached to his penis which was then strapped to his thigh, in order to maintain the smooth line of the tight trousers that were in fashion at the time. It is very difficult to ascertain the validity of this story, and the claim seems highly unlikely. No contemporary account of him adopting the practice has come to light, and many suspect that it was a myth invented by Doug Malloy who helped popularise body piercing in the United States, and who also created much of the false history commonly attached to many body piercings. It has also been theorised that the name actually refers to Queen Victoria's grandson Prince Albert Victor. This second theory probably stems from attempts to link Prince Albert Victor with the Jack the Ripper murders.

Like many other male genital piercings, it has a history of practice in gay culture in the twentieth century and became known outside that culture at the same time that body piercing began to emerge in popular culture in the late 1970s. The relatively easy procedure, rapid healing and claims of additional sexual stimulation (both to the wearer and his partner in sexual intercourse) attributed to this piercing have come to make the Prince Albert the most common male genital piercing. The easiest post-piercing wound-care is to dip the penis into a wineglass of hydrogen peroxide, followed by urination, and then a fresh dip in O2O2.

[[Image:Bottom bondage.jpg|thumb|left]]
'''Bottom bondage''' or '''buttock bondage''' is the placement of [[rope]]s tightly round the base of each [[buttock]]. The idea is to make the [[captive]]'s bottom bulge out, either for aesthetic reasons or to prepare the captive for [[spanking]] or [[cane|caning]]. Such [[rope bondage]] is sometimes an integral part of an elaborate [[bondage rope harness]].

It is difficult to get the ropes to stay in place. A fixing rope round the front, across the [[groin]], and a [[crotch rope]] are usually needed, and the captive should be made to stand upright or lie flat and not be allowed to bend at the waist.

As with [[breast bondage]], this technique does not immobilise the captive.

[[Image:Nawa shibari 1998 web.jpg|thumb|Shibari from [http://www.bodyplay.com/fakirart/ Fakier Photo Art] ]]
'''Rope bondage''' is, as the name suggests, the practice of tying people up with [[rope]].
Of all [[SM equipment]], rope is probably the most widely available; it is also relatively cheap and versatile. There are several different styles of rope [[bondage]].

== Western (aka American) Style ==
Photographer [[Irving Klaw]] and artist [[John Willie]] can be thanked for much of the style we now refer to as Western or American bondage. In their works, bondage plays a secondary role compared to the image as a whole. There is a huge emphasis on the stylised look: extreme [[stiletto|high heels]], tight [[corsets]] and [[hobble skirt]]s all place the female (males are not used in their works) in a form of bondage without any rope at all.

When drawings or photos did show [[rope]] bondage, it would usually be simple and assist in giving the bound woman an even more defined, streamlined look, forcing the body into a contortion in much the way the corset and heels did. For example, her [[wrist]]s and [[elbow_bondage|elbows]] may be tied behind the back, which would thrust the [[breast]]s forward, pull the shoulders back and force her to stand completely straight.

America's love affair with the perfect pin-up girl was clearly a big influence in creating this imagery. Western bondage has always been portrayed as symmetrical and rarely lends itself to sex. Limbs are usually tied together (wrists, elbows, ankles, knees) and there is very little use of elaborate [[Bondage_rope_harness|rope harnesses]].

Although Irving Klaw used rope in his banned (and often burned) photos of [[Bettie Page]], John Willie does not restrict his artwork to just rope bondage. Pictures include black [[leather (material)|leather]] [[monoglove]]s, [[cuff]]s and even [[chain]]s that complement the corsets and heels to complete the entire package. The bondage may be simple, but it is "real" bondage, always strict and inescapable.

== Japanese Bondage (aka Shibari) ==
[[Image:Img bird.jpg|thumb|Shibari art by [http://nawashi.com.ua/gallery nawashi Shadow] ]]
The most artistic of all bondage styles, and arguably the most beautiful, involves using rope patterns that originated in Japan. The art of Japanese bondage is not necessarily in the knowledge of these patterns or how to tie the positions, but rather in creating a feeling of freedom and beauty within the ropes.

In Japanese bondage ([[Shibari]]), an emphasis is placed on how the rope should be sensually applied to the body of the bottom. The Master will continue to add layers of rope and even take care to place knots on certain erotic pressure points. The positions often include crossed limbs or beautiful harnesses that are wonderful for bondage sex. Crossed legs allow easy access to sex organs, and harnesses make the bottom feel supported by the bondage. It also gives the Top many "grab" points to gain leverage while engaging in intercourse.

== Suspension Bondage ==
[[Image:Suspension bondage2.jpg|thumb|Suspension bondage using ropes]]
[[Suspension bondage]] is not so much a "style" as a position type, yet still worthy of mention. More experienced [[rigger]]s usually venture into partial suspension and then full suspension bondage with their bottom. The bondage can be either Western or Japanese in style, but more often the latter.

When suspended, the bottom has a feeling of floating while being fully restrained in the most inescapable of ways. There is a complete helplessness in being suspended that can make the bottom quickly fall into a delightful subspace. For the Top, there is a great feeling of achievement in full suspension and endless possibilities for great sex!

In order to become skilled as a suspension rigger, you need to understand the physics of bondage. Knowing the weight-bearing knots and a few basic ties is not enough to suspend someone safely, and beginners should be cautioned about trying suspensions too soon. Learn the basics first and then progress.

== Speed Bondage ==
This is quite literally what the name suggests and involves tying up your bottom very quickly. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chanta_rose Chanta Rose] understands it to be used mostly in role-play games that involve consenting adults playing out a non-consensual fantasy in which, if the situation were real, the bondage would be applied in a fast manner (like a [[abduction play|kidnapping]]). As a result, the bondage is not always neat, but that is part of the style in itself.

As long as the bondage is tight and inescapable, a few messy knots or ends of rope hanging on the floor just add to the grunginess of the situation, and for many this is a huge turn-on.

This can be one of the most difficult styles of rigging, as not only must you be incredibly fast (while still being safe), but more often than not the bottom is struggling to maintain the role of [[victim]] being bound against his or her will. It is not easy to tie someone who is struggling and fighting back.

== Sex Bondage ==
Again, the name says it all. Bondage for sex is literally the tying of the bottom in a position that is accessible for oral, anal and/or vaginal sex. It can be Western, Japanese, suspension, etc., as long as the sex organs are available to be penetrated when the tie is complete.

Sex bondage involves placing the bottom in bondage just tight enough to be inescapable and just stressful enough to be strict without making the position unbearable for longer periods of time. There needs to be just enough "give" for the position to be sustainable for the duration of sex and play.

== Movie Bondage ==
It is usually in some movie, television show or comic book that most people first saw "bondage" and it may have been from that moment that an interest began. Certainly, the fact that bondage in film/TV almost always shows bondage used as a negative, for an [[Abduction play|abduction]], [[interrogation]] or hostage situation, is interesting, as many people like to play these role-play games within the realms of consent.

Ironically, once you know how to rig, you will also notice that rope work is usually badly done in any type of mainstream entertainment. Loose ties are not cinched, [[knot]]s are placed where the "victim" could untie them, thick rope is used that would not effectively hold a knot and any type of [[gag]] is usually in front of the teeth, defeating its entire purpose.

In her book, [http://www.bondageforsexguide.com] Chanta Rose suggests that this is for three reasons:
* for legal reasons "real" bondage may not be permitted in mainstream entertainment (fear of censorship or harsher rating)
* the bondage is supposed to be in continuity with some type of frantic activity (like a kidnapping), therefore the bondage should be messy and imperfect;
* staff members working on the production are not into bondage and, therefore, simply don't think of things like knot placement.

As the mainstream becomes more aware, perhaps the quality of the rope work will improve.

== Porn Bondage ==
This is Chanta Rose's speciality. She believes that once someone realises that bondage is erotic, they will either find someone to try it with or look to porn (for help or masturbatory purposes).

In recent years, the number of bondage pay sites on the World Wide Web has exploded (as with all porn), yet there are still only a handful worth looking at for quality bondage. Internet porn can be a fabulous place to get ideas for role-play games or to look at different ways to tie people up. Prior to the Internet, for the most part bondage images were limited to magazines and artwork. The problem with artwork is that most humans cannot bend the way the girl in the drawing can and although bondage porn uses real people, the same problem still exists.

There is something hugely arousing about seeing a hot model tied in a backbreaking arch, or with her elbows together almost all the way up to her shoulders, or perhaps suspended in the splits...The style of good porn bondage is to show bondage that you simply could not do on the average person and that you will not see anywhere else. If you are fortunate enough to be playing with a contortionist or yoga instructor, then by all means make use of that flexibility, but don't expect it from the average person.

However, not all bondage porn is about flexibility and impossible positions. Much of it portrays other fantasies (such as abduction) on a rougher and more pornographic level than mainstream movies can. There is also a huge genre of damsel in distress sites/videos that use only basic Western bondage and try to recapture the artwork of John Willie in moving pictures.
=== Adding new stories===

If you want to add a new poem or story please carry out the following steps

# Edit this page and insert the title of your work. Stories and poems are listed in the order they were added, newest at the top of the list. The work should be listed using the following syntax:
#:'''<nowiki>*[[The title of your story]]</nowiki>'''.
# If the story or poem uses a common word such as bondage, there might already be an article of that name on the system. In that case, prefix the title with '''poem:''' or '''story:''' and use the following syntax '''<nowiki>*[[Story: Bondage|Bondage]]</nowiki>''' This will enable you to link to an article called 'Story: Bondage' but display only 'Bondage' on the screen.
Done!
A '''cut-out''' is a large hole deliberately cut in a piece of clothing to reveal the wearer's bare flesh underneath. The commonest place for a cut-out is over the [[breast]]s to emphasise [[cleavage]].
A similar idea is to have a long slit in a [[dress]] or [[skirt]] from the hem upwards, so that even though the skirt is not short, the [[thigh]] may be glimpsed as the wearer moves. A '''bride fetish''' is a sexual [[fetish]] in which either a woman (or possibly a man) enjoys dressing in the typical outfit worn by a bride, or someone derives sexual pleasure from viewing women (or possibly men) dressed in this manner.

A bride may be regarded as the archetype of a virgin ready and waiting to have [[sexual intercourse]]. A bridal outfit can be considered to be full of fetishistic imagery. Brides often wear [[lingerie]] such as [[basque]]s or [[corset]]s, [[stocking fetish|stockings]] and [[thong (lingerie)|thongs]]; they also wear [[stiletto]] shoes. Generally, a bridal dress and lingerie are white or nearly white, denoting purity. For a [[transvestite]], bridal wear may be the ultimate female apparel.

'''Abrasion play''' is the use of various rough items to rub the skin, either of oneself or someone else, with varying intensity depending upon the item being used to cause the abrasions, how hard it is pressed against the skin and how many times the area is gone over with the implement.

Examples of materials used in abrasion play could be sandpaper, a file, [[fingernails fetish|fingernails]] or [[hairbrush]]es.
In extreme cases, this could amount to [[torture]].
'''Hoods''' play a major part in [[BDSM]] imagery and practice. They can be worn by both [[submissive]]s and [[dominant]]s for a number of reasons.

* To [[objectify]] the wearer: Beacuse they obscure the face, hoods can play a major role in objectification fantasies. For a submissive, they will reduce them to the status of a sexual toy, rather than a sexual partner. For the dominant, the hood will help make them appear more distant and impersonal, projecting an image of sexual power and superiority.
* [[Sensory deprivation]]: Heavy [[latex]] or [[leather (material)|leather]] hoods can be used by the dominant partner to control the sub's ability to see and hear. This will enhance the sub's feelings of helplessness and loss of control in a [[scene]]. Inbuilt [[gags]] are often used to increase still further the sense of helplessness by limiting the ability of the sub to communicate. Heavy hoods can greatly increase the efficacy of a gag, reducing the ability of the gagged person to make any sound.
* Transformation: Animal hoods can be used as part of an [[animal transformation fantasy]], giving the wearer the features of, say, a [[dog play|dog]]. The transformation can be more abstract; hoods used in [[pony play]] often have holes at the top of the hood to allow long hair to be pulled through or have false hair attached to the top of the hood, forming a cascade not unlike a horse's tail.
* Visual impact: Hoods have a strong visual appeal, especially highly coloured [[latex]] designs, and are very popular as [[Dress_code|club wear]].
* Total enclosure: Many fetishists are turned on by the [[zentai|second skin]] elements of fetishism; hoods form an integral part of this.
* As a [[head_bondage|bondage]] device: Hoods can incorporate attachment points for ropes and chains to secure the head as part of a bondage scene.
* To disguise the wearer: Hoods can also serve the function of disguising identity when desired, for example at [[play parties]].

==Types of hood==

Because of their popularity and the multitude of reasons for wanting to wear a hood, there is a massive range of different designs available from a wide range of suppliers. This article attempts to classify hoods into a number of basic types. However, many hoods will combine elements of more than one type in their design.

* [[Animal hood]]
* [[Bondage hood]]
* [[Executioner hood]]
* [[Face masks]]
* [[Facekini]]
* [[Fetish hood]]
* [[Gas mask hood]]
* [[Gimp mask]] or '''Slave hood'''
* [[Inflatable hood]]/Ball hood
* [[Isolation hood]]
* [[Open face hood]]
* [[Ponytail hood]]
* [[Realface mask]]
* [[Strap mask]]

== Lacing ==
Many hoods, especially leather ones, have laces down the back. This allows the hood to be made very tight. Often, the laces can be covered with a flap that can be locked down for added security.

==Buying a hood==

A trawl through the web will quickly bring up a bewildering array of suppliers selling every type of hood imaginable with prices from £30 to £300. Generally you will get what you pay for, the more expensive hoods being better quality and more sophisticated in their design. Manufacturers will differ in how they go about constructing the hood, some concentrating on the quality of the stitching whilst others focus on the strength of construction. The most important thing though is the fit and this is best done by trying the hood on before buing it. If a hood is too tight it will quickly become uncomfortable and will end up not being used. If it is too loose much of the sensory delight in wearing a hood will be lost.

The most popular materials for hoods are leather and latex. Leather due to its strength tends to be more popular for [[BDSM]] and [[bondage]] use; latex due to it smoothness and range of colours is ever popular at fetish [[clubs]].

== Making latex hoods ==

Latex hoods may be made from [[glued latex]] or [[moulded latex]].

Glued latex hoods, also called tailored, are made from two or more pieces of latex sheeting joined along their edges. The more pieces in the pattern, the closer the fit, as the pieces are better able to follow the contours of the wearer's head. Skilled pattern drafters are able to make adjustments to patterns to fit a wide range of sizes. Because of the labour involved, tailored latex hoods tend to be more expensive than equivalent moulded hoods.

Moulded latex hoods are made by dipping casts into liquid latex. Reinforcing fabric tape may be attached to the cast before dipping so that the latex can bind properly to the tape. Once the latex has dried, zippers and other attachments can be sewn to the tape without fear of tearing the latex. Openings for eyes, nostrils, and mouth can be cut into the hood after it is dried. Because of the work involved in making a cast, manufacturers will typically make a limited number of sizes available and customisation of sizes is not usually an option. Moulding has the advantages of producing a seamless final product, as well as being able to make thicker products through multiple dippings.

[[Image:Inflatable.jpg|thumb|right|An inflatable]]
An '''inflatable''' is a [[latex fetish]]ist who wears garments that are inflated around the body.

Inflatable garments can be of any design, and cover any amount of the body, although they most commonly cover the genitals and the head. Needless to say, inflatable [[hood]]s covering the heads are airtight and some method to allow the wearer to breathe must be provided.

Typical inflatable garments include:
* [[inflatable catsuit]]
* [[Blueberry suit]]
* [[inflatable hood]]/ball hood
* [[inflatable leggings]]

Such fetishists describe a feeling of compression and the sensation of the added spatial volume to their bodies.

The design and manufacture of inflatable garments are challenging problems.

[[Image:Inflatablehood01.jpg|thumb|Inflatable hood (with inflatable gag) from [[Cocoon]] ]]
'''Inflatable hoods''' are [[latex]] [[hood]]s consisting of two layers, inner and outer, into which air can be pumped. This causes the hood to inflate, making the outer hood expand and the inner hood press tightly against the face. A tube passes between the hoods where the mouth would be to allow the wearer to breathe.

As with other hood types, numerous designs variations are available:

* With or without eye holes.
* Use of heavier gauge latex to for for higher pressures.
* Some will include (inflatable) gags in the design.
* Variations on number and types of breathing tube.
* Size and shape of the external hood; some designs can triple the size of the wearer's head.
* Colours, black is not the only option!

Because of their design, inflatable hoods are popular as an alternative form of [[isolation hood]] and also for [[breath play]]. Inflatable hoods because of the increased risk of suffocation have their own set of safety issues.
A '''blouse''' is a loose garment, usually of lightweight material, worn by women. It covers the upper body. It will normally have buttons down the front and a collar. It may be sleeveless, or have short or long sleeves.

Blouses may be made of [[fetish]] materials such as [[latex]] or [[satin]]. If the blouse is shaped and is not too loose, it outlines the [[breast]]s clearly. It may be possible to see the wearer's [[bra]] through the blouse (especially if it is a dark-coloured bra, or a white bra on a dark-skinned woman, under a pale blouse), or to glimpse the breasts or bra through the arm holes of a sleeveless blouse or between two buttons where the material gapes.
